I’ve noticed a pattern, especially in point based tournaments. I call it the “ugly 2”. Often, the guard player hustles and finds a way to the top and reverses the position. If you ask them the name of the sweep, they won’t be able to tell. It’s a fusion of a few, and through willpower and grit they end up on top.
At the same time, we often see some crisp setups. You can clearly see that the player performed that exact sequence countless times, and didn’t miss one step in the sequence.
Both have the same end result.
Some fighters pride themselves on being one way or another, and I think a combination of both is ideal. Especially to counter whoever you are going against.
If you are going against a technician, finding “ugly 2s” will throw them off beat and surprise them. They may even think “Damn. That wasn’t supposed to work”. And Vice versa, the best way to deal with the hustlers, is by being a technician. Being patient and looking to establish the exact series of movements to get the upper hand.
