Masterskya is a Russian word meaning “Workshop”. A place to hone your craft, and develop oneself.
Masterskya was founded by Alex Ecklin and Evor Guevarra in 2016.
Alex’s vision was to build a learning environment enabling professionals, aspiring competitors, and anyone who is interested in self development to train together on the same mats and grow together.
At the same time, honesty, transparency and fairness were/are extremely important.
In the beginning days of Masterskya on Goodwin Place, the adult program operated on a pure donation basis. Today, the values remain and we are proud to be accessible and fair to anyone who wants to step foot on our mats.
Marshall Gelbman and Miguel Restrepo joined the team in the early days and were both instrumental in the growth and vision of the school.
In 2018, Van Allen Flores joined as a partner and together with Alex opened up a second academy in Downtown Brooklyn. Alex and Van also lead the Google BJJ program in Chelsea.
In 2020, Alex and Van had to close down both of the locations and halt the classes in Google due to the pandemic.
In 2021 Masterskya found its new home in SoHo, Manhattan. Tommy “Wonton Parm” Catapano, a close friend of Alex and Van helped upstart season 3.
With a second wind, Masterskya is rebuilding and continuing providing the highest level training in an open and welcoming environment for all.
From 2021 to 2022, Masterskya welcomed three affiliates. The first affiliate was Sharks Academy of Iran, second was Ton Dojo of Montreal and finally Fire House Jiu Jitsu of Catskills all joined Masterskya with the goal to spread honest, high level Jiu Jitsu to the world.
In 2023, Masterskya welcomed Malandros BJJ as an affiliate, and partnered with Crossfit718 in Brooklyn to relaunch Masterskya Brooklyn.
*** In 2021, partnered with the leading BJJ video publisher “BJJ Fanatics” to release his instructional video called the “G-Roll”, based on a attack system Alex has developed since he was a purple belt. see clip below and click here to purchase The G-Roll by Alex Masterskya – bjjfanatics.com.
